Its fifteen schools draw on a renowned faculty, making it among the country's most productive research centers. Columbia may be Ivy League, but it is not an ivory tower. Not only does Morningside Heights offer the diverse activities that are characteristic of New York, it is also representative of the contrasts that define this city. The challenges facing large urban areas-educating children, helping the poor, stimulating affordable housing, and preserving the environment-are evident throughout New York City's many diverse communities. The University's urban setting reinforces SIPA's emphasis on real-world problems and their practical solutions. As a student in the Executive MPA program, you will be a part of the Columbia community, as well as the equally vital community at SIPA. This is more than just a collegial affiliation. In any given week, SIPA hosts dozens of speakers who share their expertise on topics ranging from children's welfare to environmental issues facing New York. SIPA's programs continue to adapt in exciting ways to a rapidly changing world. What remains unchanged, though, is the abiding public spirit at the heart of our mission. The educational experience at SIPA is facilitated and enhanced by numerous resources offered by both the School and the University. Along with Butler Library, which houses two million volumes, students in the Executive MPA program will find the Thomas J. Watson Library of Business and Economics, the Augustus C. Long Health Sciences Library, and the Arthur W. Diamonds Law Library to be particularly useful. The goal of the Libraries is to provide excellent service to students and faculty that will advance each user’s learning, teaching, and research experience at Columbia and they strive to support library users anytime and anywhere. Their success is enabled by the outstanding staff that builds and manages the collections and technologies and provides strong and innovative services across the Columbia Libraries. The Libraries are wonderful gathering places to pursue scholarly research, to learn about and use information technology, to write, to study, and to draw on our rich collection of print and electronic resources. In addition to being used for word processing, the lab also serves as an instructional facility, providing students with the skills needed to compete in the current job market.
