Dr. William Eimicke
to serve as Deputy Commissioner for Strategic Planning and Policy in the New York City Fire Department
Dr. William B. Eimicke, Director of the Picker Center for Executive Education at Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs, is taking a one-year public service leave immediately to serve as deputy commissioner for strategic planning and policy at the New York City Fire Department. Professor Eimicke will report directly to Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta.
"I am very pleased to be working with Commissioner Scoppetta and the FDNY on a full-time basis for the coming year," said Eimicke. "If my fate had been different, I would have been a fireman. But working with the FDNY in any capacity is God's work."
As deputy commissioner for strategic planning and policy, Professor Eimicke will advise the commissioner on implementation of the fire department's strategic planning, performance management system and developing education partnerships to promote executive and management skill building.
Since 2002, Eimicke has been working with the FDNY as faculty director of Columbia University's Fire Officers Management Institute, which was established after Sept. 11, 2001, to provide fire and emergency medical staff chiefs with a customized curriculum of leadership and management training. Eimicke estimates that more than 80 officers have graduated from the management institute.
Eimicke is founding director of the Picker Center for Executive Education. Prior to joining Columbia, he served as New York State's Commissioner of Housing, director of fiscal studies for the New York State Senate, assistant budget director of the City of New York and deputy commissioner of New York City�s Department of Housing Preservation and Development. He has a Ph.D. from Syracuse University and is widely published.
During Eimicke's absence, Professor Arvid Lukauskas will serve as acting director of the Picker Center and Milena Gomez who will serve as the institute's deputy director.

In today's rapidly changing world, professionals must be lifelong learners, acquiring skills and broadening their horizons throughout their careers.
